Stock Market Indices

A market index is a numerical measure calculated based on a selected company basket.

The most popular stock indices (the tickers are in parentheses):

  • S&P-500 (^GSPC) represents the 500+ companies with the largest market cap listed on the American stock exchanges.
  • Dow Jones (^DJI) represents the 30 largest companies.
  • Russell-1000 (^RUI) represents the 1000 largest companies traded on the US exchanges.
  • Russell-3000 (^RUA) represents the 3000 largest companies.
  • NASDAQ Composite (^IXIC) represents all (2500+) companies listed on the NASDAQ exchange.
  • NASDAQ-100 (^NDX) represents the 100 largest companies listed on the NASDAQ exchange.
  • US Total Market represents 3000+ largest companies traded on the US exchanges. More precisely, it is a family of indices that track the behavior of the entire market. For example, Russell-3000 is one such index.
